What is Freshwater?

Freshwater

Freshwater is generally a habitat with a low concentration of dissolved salts and dissolved solid. This low salt and solute concentration differentiates freshwater from saltwater and brackish water.

There are different types of freshwater habitats found in different areas all over the world. Some examples of freshwater ecosystems are lakes, ponds, rivers, wetlands, springs, and streams. These freshwater habitats are differentiated by different factors such as vegetation and temperature.

What is Freshwater Fish?

Freshwater Fish

Simply put, freshwater fishes are those found in freshwater instead of in the sea. A common misconception about freshwater fishes is that they are colorless, bland, and boring. But this could not be any farther from the truth.

While it is true that salt water teems with colorful fishes and extraordinary marine creatures, freshwater has its fair share of beautiful fishes as well.

The degree of difficulty of caring for freshwater fishes varies widely from one breed to another. Here are some colorful freshwater fishes that are relatively easy to take care of even if you are a beginner in taking care of fishes:

Caring For Freshwater Fishes

A healthy fish is a beautiful fish, so if you’re planning to keep a freshwater aquarium, you must know how to take care of them properly. Here are two important tips on how you can keep your colorful freshwater fishes healthy and happy:

  • 1. Acclimate the fishes to your aquarium. Fishes are pretty sensitive to change in water composition and temperature, so you need to give your fishes time to adjust to their new environment.
  • You can do this by floating the sealed bag of fishes on your aquarium for at least 15 minutes, adding water from the aquarium to the bag every few minutes to afford the fishes time to get used to their new environment
  • 2. Give your fishes enough room to roam around. A full aquarium might look great, but overcrowding can detrimental to your fishes’ health. This way, you can be sure that they have enough oxygen in the aquarium. This also slows down waste accumulation in your tank

Conclusion

There are plenty of colorful freshwater fishes out there, and these are just five of them. If you want to see more colorful ones, you might want to visit an aquarium or a pet shop. If you’re already a pro at taking care of fishes, you might even ask pet shop owners for rarer varieties.
