As a traveler, I'm the outdoorsy type. I love exploring nature and I am particularly fond of beaches. There's just something laid back and relaxed about seaside locations. The food is superb, too! And if you like partying with an international crowd, I’m telling you, beach clubs are the place to visit!
Another thing I really love about going to beach locations is that packing is very easy. I like how I could always travel light, making it easier to explore the location even with my baggage in tow. The downside, however, is that picking the right swimsuit can be quite time-consuming.
This might sound like a trivial concern, but it actually is rather significant. During my travels, I’ve realized that there are places which are significantly more conservative. Wearing swimwear which might be too revealing in those places could earn you a couple of stares and unfriendly glances.
That said, the best bet for women would be something both comfy but, at the same time, not too revealing. This is where one piece swimsuits come in. In this article, I’ll give you some pointers on how to choose right one piece swimsuit.
You will need very few things to find the perfect one piece swimsuit for you. For this tutorial, you will only need the following items:
If you don’t have a full-length mirror, you can make do with a shorter mirror. You might have to prop the mirror on a chair, however, so you could have a full view of your torso.
If you prefer a more accurate assessment, then you might also opt to just take your measurements and plug the numbers in an online body shape calculator.
If you prefer to do your swimsuit in the comfort of your home, then you would need a swimsuit catalog. Alternatively, you can also browse through the catalogs of online shopping sites.
Once you have these three things ready, we can start with the tutorial.
This doesn’t necessarily have to be the first step, but I am an advocate of smart shopping and budget traveling so I’ll put it up here. Before you start buying a one piece swimsuit, it would do you well to fix a budget.
Swimsuits are available at different price points, depending on where you shop, so you wouldn’t have to worry about running out of options. If you’re buying several swimsuits, all the more you would have to keep watch of your budget. This will keep you from overspending.
Once you’ve decided on a budget, you’re ready to move to the next step.
Firstly, know that confidence is key. Whatever your body shape, the most important thing is to be confident in whatever you’re wearing. This notwithstanding, there is nothing wrong with wanting to enhance your natural body shape and accentuate your best features.
To find the best swimsuit style for you, it is important to determine your body shape first. You can do this by standing in front of a mirror in your undergarments or tight-fitting clothes, and assessing your body shape.
If your bust and hips are roughly the same sizes, coupled with a small waist, then you are an hourglass. If your hips are significantly wider than your waist and bust, then you are a pear. If your waist is wider than your hips and around the same width as your bust, then you are an apple.
Alternatively, you can take a measuring tape, measure around your bust, waist, and hips, and plug in the numbers in an online body shape calculator.
As I’ve said, I’m all for celebrating different body shapes. But this doesn’t mean that I don’t believe in choosing flattering swimsuit styles. There is countless advice on how to flatter your body shape on the internet, so I wouldn’t discuss that in detail here.
As a general rule, however, make sure that the design of your one piece swimsuit balances out your body. For example, if you want to lengthen your torso, then you would want a V-neck or a plunging neckline.
If you want to look slimmer, then you might want to opt for darker colors. To give the illusion of longer and slimmer legs, opt for a one piece swimsuit with a high-leg, preferably one cut to the hip bone. If you want to draw attention away from your hips or butt, then a boyleg cut might work for you.
Another important consideration when picking a one piece swimsuit is your itinerary. While a delicate one piece swimsuit might be perfect for lounging at the beach or by the poolside, or just chilling in general, might be perfect, it might not be the best option for water sports.
If I don’t have a lot of activities planned for the day, I generally go with softer fabrics, especially since my skin is pretty sensitive. For water sports and island hopping, however, I gravitate towards more durable fabrics and materials.
Also, if you plan to attend a nighttime beach or pool party, you might want to go for less revealing cuts made of warmer materials. This way, you can stay comfortable all throughout the night.
Finally, choose a swimsuit in a color which works best for your complexion. For people with paler complexions, dark and deep jewel tones are very flattering. On the flipside, those with darker skin tones look great in bright and pastel hues.
You can also use colors and patterns to accentuate certain features. For example, if there’s a particular feature you want to highlight, then you would want to go for bright colors and patterns for that particular area.
On the other hand, if there’s a feature you want to downplay, then you should opt for solid colors. Note, however, that this is not a hard and fast rule. Don’t be scared to experiment. If there’s a particular color or style you like, then go ahead and try it. Fashion rules are constantly changing and flexible, after all.
Picking the right one piece swimsuit is super easy, so long as you know how to choose the right one. All you have to do is follow the four easy steps enumerated above. These are foolproof and have never failed me through the years.
That said, never hesitate to experiment. Your wardrobe, just like your travels, should be tailored especially for you. Feel free to make modifications to suit your own style, itinerary, budget, and lifestyle. The important consideration is that you are comfortable in what you’re wearing.
